Alfreton Town JFC 2008

As we looked to improve on last season’s runners up place, 2 players left the club with 2 joining, it was a difficult start, as we dropped more points in the first month than we had lost in the whole of the previous league campaign.

Due to weather conditions, by the Christmas break, we’d played only 8 league games, winning 4, drawing 2, and losing 2, although we had progressed into the quarter final of the challenge cup, after knocking out the league leaders Mickleover Sports Jnrs 1-2 away from home.

Wins against Belper (a) 2-4 and West Hallam 2-5 (a) set up a repeat of last season’s cup final against Chesapeake at Moorways Stadium, Chesapeake went into the game as favourites, but it was Alfreton who took the game to Chesapeake from the first whistle, limiting them to a couple of long range efforts throughout the match while creating some good chances of their own but without success during normal time, 0-0.

5 minutes into extra time Alfreton scored what turned out to be the winner, after Danny Fields coolly rounded the keeper to score in his second final running, although Danny got the headlines, there were some impressive individual displays in this brilliant team performance!

A fantastic day for all connected with Alfreton Juniors as they retained the trophy!

After the cup victory we went on a ten match unbeaten run in the league,, winning 8 drawing 2 scoring 46 goals which took us into 2nd place but a defeat on the last day of the season dropped us into a disappointing 4th place.

Overall it was an incredible achievement to retain the cup but we were disappointed with the league position, we deserved better.

Thanks also to Jason Hempshall for refereeing, Bev hale for supplying refreshments, Paul Noonan and Paul Johnson for helping with match day duties, And Neil McKenna for his continued sponsorship of the club.
