Alfreton Town JFC 2008

Season Review

Well here we are the end of the 2008/09 season.  What a roller coaster of a season it has been.  During the pre-season games, we were trying to establish a team that could do well in the league.  2 games against Alfreton sides and one against Cougars helped get the team motivated for the season ahead.  Unfortunately the game we all wanted against Codnor got rained off.  But nether the less, pre-season was a good one for us.

What also helped was coming runners up in the Codnor Boys Invitational Tournament.  A big well done to all the lads as the lads that were there were representing the WHOLE team.

The season got under way just as I hoped.  The results were going our way and everything was smooth sailing.  We started off in the cup and those results were also good.  Just as I thought things were going well, in came Mother Nature to ruin things.  7 weeks of no training and no games meant we had a mountain to climb.

Unfortunately we went out of the cup but then we started a bad run of results in the league.  No matter what we tried, we just couldn’t get back into the swing of how we normally play.

Nether the less, the lads were true professionals and carried on just as I asked them to.  They tried so hard to bring us back and the work rate both in training and in games was second to none.  I could have not asked for anything else from them (except a win or two!!!)  Come the last couple of games and we finally found our form and really did play fantastically.

The second half of the Matlock (away) game and the final game of the season will always stay with me.  Those moments were the best I have EVER seen these lads play.  Sheer determination and the effort was faultless.

At the end of the day, the lads conducted themselves like true professionals and not giving up when the going gets tough (there is a song in there somewhere!!!!).

Big thank you to the lads for letting me take over as manager.  It has been an absolute pleasure to take you guys forward another season.  You are the best set of lads I have worked with and I mean that.

We have had our ups and downs but at the end of the day, we are a unit and you lads are doing what you enjoy and that’s playing football.

Here’s to 2009/10 season……………….
