MISSED CHANCES COST ALFRETON DEAR
BUXTON JFC U16’S - 3 ALFRETON TOWN JFC U16’S - 1
The first game of the season is always one you like to get under your belt, however, it was Buxton’s second game and they came out focused and on a mission soon catching Alfreton’s defence at sixes and sevens netting in the first few minutes of the game. Alfreton began to settle and started creating chances of their own, both James and Higton coming close. Buxton always looked dangerous on the counter and took advantage of a hole in the defence to net for the second time much to Alfreton’s dismay. Subs Church and Arrowsmith took the fight back to Buxton, the latter player showing a clean pair of heels to the Buxton defence for a tap in to make it 2-1 just before the half time whistle. Alfreton were back in the game. Fired up, Alfreton totally dominated the play for the next 35 minutes with a barrage of shots raining in on the Buxton goals so Buxton put 10 men behind the ball as the reds continued to pepper the beleaguered Buxton goal mouth hitting the post, the crossbar or just high and wide. Several goal mouth scrambles saw the Buxton keeper make some last ditch saves to his credit, but Alfreton couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net for a second time, then just with minutes to go, a slip up from an Alfreton free kick caught out a short staffed Alfreton defence and Buxton sealed the game running out 3-1 winners. The lesson to be learnt surely must be to take our chances when they are given, we’ll meet again!
